The Hamburg Open (WTA 250) is in danger. In fact, the tournament scheduled for July 20th simply no longer has a venue. Organizer of the men’s tournament since 2019 and the women’s tournament since 2021, the MatchMaker company had managed to create a mixed event. But this year the latter lost the rights to the men’s tournament to the Tennium company. Still the holder of the women’s tournament, MatchMaker had made it known that it would still abandon the Rothenbaum stadium to find a new site.
A rap concert behind the pitch during the final
It was to be THC Horn-Hamm, in the city’s municipal park, where a temporary 2,000-seat center court could be built. Everything seemed to be going well with the move to this site in the countryside, before everything fell apart. In fact, the semi-finals and the final are scheduled at the same time as the concerts of local rapper Finch. The Horn-Hamm THC facilities are located near the outdoor stage that hosts the Stadpark Open Air, an outdoor concert series, every summer.
In addition to the obvious noise problems, both during soundchecks and concerts, there was also the issue of safety with two visitor flows, for the tournament and for the concerts. While MatchMaker guarantees that it is doing everything possible to find a replacement site, the Hamburg Open is currently without a home and is less than three months away from taking place.
